People Pleasing vs. Financial Harmony

Are you the kind of person who loves being the life and soul of a party, having bottomless brunches or going on a trip with people that honestly, don't really light you up? Do you promise yourself that you will not lend money to relatives or friends and then weaken and give money away knowing that you will never see it again? It is a very common scenario where many people have wrapped their self-esteem, self-worth and selflessness into a ball of people-pleasing, ultimately impacting their emotional financial wellbeing.

Coming to the realisation that you sacrifice your financial harmony for the opinions and validation of others can be a shock to the system. To unravel the layers of your people-pleasing habits and reclaiming your financial independence requires courage and self-awareness. This can be both confronting and insightful but is ultimately a crucial step to understanding the true essence of who you are, identifying how committed you are to your emotional financial wellbeing and achieving financial harmony.

The good news is that if it makes you uncomfortable to acknowledge that you see yourself in these scenarios, then you are ready to take charge of your emotional financial wellbeing. You may be superb in setting boundaries around your physical and mental health but many struggle to create boundaries around their financial health.

Well how do you create financial boundaries?

One of the first steps to is create boundaries around who, what, where and when you spend your money. But the most critically important question to ask yourself is WHY - WHY am I spending  money in this way?

  • Am I spending money out of fear of missing out?

  • Am I spending money out of guilt?

  • Am I spending money out of fear?

  • Am I spending money because it makes me feel better?

If you can answer YES to any of these, then the next question to ask yourself is WHY, again. When you honestly answer (with no fear or judgement) the reason WHY you are spending or lending money in a manner that does not serve your energy, you will be truly amazed at:

  • How your spending habits change,

  • How you speak about yourself changes,

  • How your perception of yourself will change

  • How you view the value of money (a tool to be used towards a goal but also as your own self-worth)

"Money flows where the intention goes."
